According to The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, “This area is the healthiest part of the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge” as it is located away from the Launch operations areas of the Kennedy Space Center.
It contains over 1000 species of plants, 117 species of fish, 68 species of amphibians and reptiles, 330 bird species , and 31 mammal species. Of these species, 21 are listed as endangered either by the state of Florida or by the US federal government.
Shiloh is part of the Great Florida Birding Trail
Shiloh is a “dark sky” site used by the Kennedy Space Center Amateur Astronomers and the Brevard Astronomical Society for astronomical observation and imaging.
According to Space Florida’s own documents, the transportation infrastructure in the Shiloh area is ” inadequate”, including “the existing Haulover Canal bridge providing access to the future Shiloh LC from the south…” This means that the manatee protection and observation area around Haulover, will be destroyed as the bridge is widened. The impact on the eco-tourism in that area will be catastrophic. Many visitors come to this region to see the manatees.
