Shiloh, Florida has been inhabited by people since prehistoric times.
Over 120 archeological sites have been recorded in the Shiloh area, some dating as early as 2000-500 BC.
Taking advantage of the Gulf Stream, discovered by Ponce de Leon in 1513, Spanish and other colonial powers sailed past the area on their return to Europe from the Americas between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries.
A pivotal encounter between the French and Spanish for control of Florida occurred in the vicinity of today’s national seashore, and Spain and Britain were often at odds over Florida.
The Haulover Canal area just south of Shiloh was used by the prehistoric settlers and later by the European settlers to bring supplies across the rivers in the area.
A one-room schoolhouse was built for the black children of the community with lumber brought over on a sailboat from Titusville. Research has since shown the schoolhouse was built between 1890 and 1891.
Space Florida and some developers are trying to build a new launch complex in this environmentally sensitive and historic area. This Launch Complex has no technical merits and will endanger not only the Shiloh area, but also the residents in the Scottsmoor area.
